The Every1 Project, funded by the European Union, aims to enable all European citizens to actively engage in the digital energy transition. The project begins by mapping stakeholder profiles, identifying what they know, how they seek information, and where they face challenges. By evaluating existing and emerging solutions, Every1 defines practical use cases that highlight the knowledge and skills stakeholders need to take on impactful roles in the energy landscape.

These insights inform tailored learning pathways, supporting the development of accessible capacity-building materials, including online courses, information booklets, and interactive games. Every1 collaborates closely with energy communities, local authorities, and cluster organisations, which form our Ecosystems Network, to strengthen their role in the energy transition and digitalisation. Through tailored training, networking, and capacity-building activities, the Ecosystems Network helps coordinators, staff, and citizens across Europe adapt to digitalisation and connect with key stakeholders.

Additionally, Every1 fosters collaboration by sharing best practices with policymakers and energy regulators through our Market Enablers Network, as well as with other European initiatives to address barriers and co-create communication resources that enhance knowledge sharing across the sector.

The OPENTUNITY project (Opening the electricity ecosystem to multiple actors in order to have a real decarbonization opportunity) is designed to drive the digitalization of the energy sector, aligning with the EU’s Energy Digitalization Roadmap. By demonstrating and integrating innovative solutions, the project aims to create a synergic energy ecosystem with advanced tools for grid operators, while enabling the prosumers to unlock the flexibility potential of their energy assets. The tools and solutions that will be developed within OPENTUNITY will be implemented and evaluated in four large-scale pilot projects in Greece, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland. The relevant solutions will help the acceleration of advanced flexibility markets, while supporting the integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and the expansion of e-mobility. The developed planning, monitoring, and control tools for power networks are expected to benefit electricity markets by contributing to an overall reduction in system costs.

ΙCCS, as the technical manager of the project, plays a critical role in its technical assessment and the definition of its use-cases. ICCS is also responsible for the development of tools that provide grid monitoring and control capabilities. The relevant solutions include state-estimation tools for system operators, as well as real-time thermal rating tools that utilize dynamic line rating algorithms. Advanced asset management modules will also be developed, including long-term solutions which target the end-of-life prediction of equipment, as well as short term asset management solutions focusing on fault detection of critical power system equipment. Moreover, ICCS will develop a network planning tool that offers insights on optimal distribution system upgrades with user defined objectives like cost reduction, maximum RES integration and investment deferral through flexibility mechanisms.

The increasing share of inverter-based resources (IBRs) into the power system has brought stability challenges that hinder further IBR integration and energy sector decarbonization. These instabilities relate to the inverters operating as either current sources or voltage sources, neither of which is appropriate for all conditions. UNIFORM aims to bridge this gap by unifying these two marginal operating modes into a universal control framework that features combined voltage- and current-source properties for improved stability. This proof-of-concept project aspires to unlock the true potential of inverters towards materializing our ambitious energy transformation targets.

The project is funded by UKRI (EP/Y001575/1) and partners University of Southampton, Institute of Communication and Computer Systems NTUA (ICCS-NTUA), National Energy System Operator and Smart Power Networks.

Reliability, Resilience, and Defense Technology for the Grid

R2D2 (Reliability, Resilience, and Defense Technology for the Grid) is an EU-funded Horizon project launched in October 2022 and scheduled to conclude in September 2025 (36 months duration). The consortium comprises 16 beneficiaries across Europe, including ICCS.

R2D2 strategic goal is to improve the resilience and reliability of current EPES (Electrical Power and Energy Systems) against a growing number of threats and vulnerabilities that may affect such critical infrastructure, exposing weaknesses with harmful and damaging effects on different stakeholders and final customers. This is done through the deployment of four tools dedicated to the prevention, protection and restoration of EPES in two different independent but complementary scenarios in the energy value-chain – from regional coordination between TSOs, to privacy of LV customers. The project builds on top of strong energy coordination actions in South-East Europe (SEE), following EU legislation and in alignment with the recent activities promoted by ENTSO-E about cyber-security in transmission systems.

Through the demonstration and integration of the innovative solutions proposed by R2D2, it will be possible to achieve a more secure, reliable and resilient energy system in Europe, making a positive and tangible impact throughout the European EPES value chain.
