INSIGHT is a Horizon Europe project funded under the WIDERA programme (HORIZON-WIDERA-2024-ERA-02-03), bringing together 11 partners from across Europe to strengthen early-stage research careers within the European Research Area.

INSIGHT aims to establish interconnected talent ecosystems that connect academia, industry, and the public sector, facilitating attractive, inclusive, and sustainable career pathways for early-stage researchers. The project promotes the implementation of the new Charter for Researchers, drives organisational change in participating institutions, and equips researchers with the cross-sectoral and digital skills demanded by Europe’s evolving labour market — with a particular focus on the Green Deal, digital transition, and deep tech.

Innovation & Networking office  leads the pilot talent ecosystem,  where it supervises the integration of human factors in technology acceptance within the automotive and manufacturing sectors. The second sprint event of the pilot will be hosted in Greece under ICCS’s coordination.

NURISH (NURturing transformative capacities, Innovation in NBS and Harmonious resilience in rural areas) aims to enhance climate resilience and sustainable development in rural and small urban communities by implementing transformative nature-based, technological and circular economy solutions. It supports the EU’s long-term vision for stronger, connected, resilient, and prosperous rural areas by 2040, contributing to territorial cohesion, innovation, job creation, skills development, better infrastructure and sustainable agriculture.

The project will develop the Regenerative Rural Resilience Framework to help rural areas mitigate climate risks through nature-based solutions (NBS), fostering entrepreneurship and creating green jobs. Resilience Hubs (RHs) in Greece, Cyprus, Finland and the UK will demonstrate tailored NBS to address flooding, water scarcity and land degradation, while digital tools will support real-time monitoring and decision-making.

Communities in the demonstration and replication areas will actively participate in the EU Rural Pact, promoting rural perspectives, fostering collaboration and advancing nature restoration and conservation through NBS. By sharing knowledge and scaling solutions across rural regions, NURISH ensures its strategies are adaptable and replicable throughout Europe, contributing to the EU Green Deal, the Climate Adaptation Strategy and rural prosperity goals by 2040.

The EU-funded project CCAMbassador (Connected, Cooperative and Automated MoBility Assessment & Stakeholder Dedicated and Operational awareness Raising) complements the coordination and alignment efforts of the CCAM Partnership and expands stakeholder engagement and knowledge sharing beyond R&I communities to support faster transitions from innovation to implementation.

CCAMbassador assists mobility solution implementers (e.g. infrastructure providers, transport service providers, local/regional authorities) in turning innovations into real service operations by identifying key building blocks for deployment and fostering cross-border collaboration and harmonised approaches. 

The project also promotes and supports widespread adoption of the European Common Evaluation Methodology for CCAM (EU-CEM) and revises the EU-CEM Handbook to reflect the feedback collected from users. It strengthens the EU-wide Knowledge Base on CCAM to better fulfill the expectations and goals of society, and the needs of non-experts, citizens, local and national authorities, researchers and implementation actors.

CCAMbassador is the follow-up Action of the FAME project, which managed and further developed the CCAM Knowledge Base and developed the EU-CEM as part of its European framework for testing on public roads.

CCAMbassador Objectives

• Facilitate consultation and concertation for the CCAM ecosystem by setting up engagement mechanisms to stimulate cooperation, consensus building on R&I needs to support the transition to CCAM operations ​
• Analyse research and deployment initiatives to identify national and international cooperation opportunities, define building blocks for going into operations and identify lessons learnt and harmonization needs for deployment 
• Assess and increase the general public’s awareness and empower implementers, including public authorities and operators, to enable CCAM deployment ​
• Enhance and expand the CCAM Knowledge Base to increase the usability and address the specific needs of key stakeholder groups, raise their awareness and capacity for deploying CCAM ​
• Promote and facilitate the practical use of the EU-CEM in CCAM impact assessment initiatives, assess its relevance for Member States’ use, and update it on the basis of new identified needs and collected feedback​

Roads4All (Co-creating safer Living Roads for all through a holistic, multi-level, participatory approach to cultural transformation) orchestrates a transformative shift in traffic safety culture across Europe through a holistic, multi-level approach targeting individual, organisational, and institutional levels. Conceptualising Living Roads, we co-design, implement and evaluate a comprehensive and tailored set of real-world, theory-informed, context-specific, and culturesensitive road safety interventions in 5 diverse settings.

Our approach centres on continuous engagement with all key stakeholders, ranging from school communities and road users to enterprises and authorities, establishing continuous consultation, collaboration, and feedback. Drawing on evidence-based tools we develop, such as the Roads4All model, framework and decision support toolkit, our interventions leverage both theoretical and empirical insights. We drive change to influence attitudes and promote safe behaviours by innovating with open schooling and Cultural & Creative Arts and experimenting with advanced technologies. We educate, increase awareness building readiness for change, cultivate empathy and co-existence on road, and recommend safe organisational practices. Ultimately, we create guidelines, a roadmap for change and suggest policies towards institutionalisation of traffic safety culture. By integrating strategy and practice, we seek to develop essential values and norms that support a robust traffic safety culture. With a special emphasis on youth, we aim to address high-risk groups and promote long-term behavioural change. Our diverse consortium, consisting of 14 partners from 8 countries, and our consultation structures at national, EU and international levels, bring together a wide range of expertise across EU and beyond, ensuring the replication and sustainability of Roads4All results in various cultural and contextual settings, and paving the way for a traffic cultural transformation that is aligned with targets for climate, health, and more.

Gas sensors are crucial in the personal and industrial monitoring to analyze personal exposure to air pollutants or to critical gases, to control product quality such as in the food industry, in health care by analyzing gases from human body and using breath analysis combined with wearable sensors for personal stress estimation. These applications require miniaturized low power and low-cost gas sensors with good gas selectivity to be integrated in personal devices, in product packaging or in widely distributed sensor networks.

AMUSENS aims at developing a gas sensor platform with flexible selectivity to different gas environments by combining a multi-pixel approach and artificial intelligence to adapt the data analysis to the targeted applications. It is based on metal oxide sensing materials on micro-hotplate platform, which are already available on the market for low power applications, but suffer from a lack of selectivity. Gas-selective multi-pixel sensors based on different metal oxide materials have been demonstrated, but their industrialization is limited to few industrially available materials. By using original additive manufacturing approaches for local liquid-phase and gas-phase depositions, we aim at extending the choice of available materials and demonstrate their sustainability in wafer-scale processing. Artificial intelligence will be used to accelerate the choice of materials, for data fusion to determine specific patterns in the gas analysis and to optimize sensor calibration through calibration transfer models. Three specific applications targeting personal exposure and health care will demonstrate the adaptability of the platform, based on an analysis of the users’ requirements. AI interpretation will be facilitated using model-agnostic interpretability analysis of the AI-based models for calibration transfer and on the use-case models.

The project brings together 11 partners from across Europe, with a total budget of over €8.5 million, and a duration of 48 months.

I-SENSE Group/ICCS proudly joins AMUSENS from May 2025 and will give a new boost to the project through:

• The development of interpretable AI models for calibration transfer and signal analysis (WP15 & WP16),
• Participation in the co-design process to ensure user-aligned tools,
• And real-life testing with human participants in the stress estimation use case, combining breath analysis with wearable devices (WP10).

The Connected and Adaptive Maintenance for Safer Urban and Secondary Roads project (‘CAMBER’) aims to develop and demonstrate improved safety monitoring across urban and secondary rural road networks through realtime data feedback into road maintenance systems and proven low-cost interventions. Performance metrics based on new-generation data sources will provide road managers up-to-date information on safety issues, damage, and routine maintenance and upgrade needs. Data collated from a range of sources, such as telematics, vehicle and smartphone sensors, and road user feedback, will feed into safety assessment models to flag what measures are required to ensure a safe road environment for all road users, including road-user minority groups with varying design needs, such as powered two-wheelers (PTW).

CAMBER will support this through much-need research and testing of low-cost road safety interventions and low-impact maintenance techniques, including those for vehicles with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The approaches will be demonstrated on urban and road networks in five European countries. CAMBER’s economically-sound solutions and new knowledge will be communicated through established networks to European road managers, policymakers and industry to support the decision-making and investment needed for more efficient maintenance for safer urban and secondary roads.

The Koropi premises feature state-of-the-art office spaces and cutting-edge research labs, dedicated primarily to Industry 5.0 applications and the testing of pioneering innovations. These new facilities will empower our researchers, fostering creativity, collaboration, and the development of groundbreaking technologies that push the frontiers of science and engineering.

The opening celebration was led by Dr. Angelos Amditis, Research and Development Director of ICCS and Director of I-SENSE, who welcomed attendees and shared his vision for the future. Short speeches were given by Prof. John Psarras (ICCS’s Director), Professor P.Tsanakas (Dean of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineerings/NTUA) who backed the effort, Dr. Giannis Karaseitanidis (I-SENSE Technical Director) and Dr. Georgios Tsimiklis (Research TMAT) whose commitment, hard work, and hands-on involvement were crucial in bringing the new premises to life. Everyone highlighted how important this new space is for the Greek research community.

Beyond a significant achievement for ICCS, the Koropi site represents a landmark development for NTUA and the broader academic ecosystem. It will also host the innovative activities of CogniSensus, a dynamic new spin-off of ICCS. Born from years of intensive research by the I-SENSE group, CogniSensus is set to revolutionize sensing, data modeling, visualization, and actuation technologies. These solutions aim to enhance decision-making, operational efficiency, and training in complex environments.

This expansion marks a pivotal milestone for ICCS, laying the foundation for continued excellence, innovation, and societal impact in the years to come.

The THETIDA project will achieve this goal through the development of a preventive conservation strategy that includes monitoring, risk preparedness and management, for underwater and coastal (U&C-CH) sites, identify and ward off additional threats and promote adaptation, reconstruction and other post-disruption strategies to restore normal conditions to the historic areas, as well as long-term strategic approaches to adapt to climate change and to wield policy tools for economic resilience.

In this project, an interdisciplinary team of researchers, experts and practitioners will develop, test and validate an integrated multiple heritage risk assessment and protection system with evidence-based monitoring frameworks, innovative tools and instruments and through participatory processes (Citizens’ Science and Living Labs). The project implementation actions will link the social innovations with cutting-edge technologies (ICT and IoT harmonised tools).
