Adaptable multi-pixel gas sensor platform for a wide range of appliance and consumer markets

Gas sensors are crucial in the personal and industrial monitoring to analyze personal exposure to air pollutants or to critical gases, to control product quality such as in the food industry, in health care by analyzing gases from human body and using breath analysis combined with wearable sensors for personal stress estimation. These applications require miniaturized low power and low-cost gas sensors with good gas selectivity to be integrated in personal devices, in product packaging or in widely distributed sensor networks.

AMUSENS aims at developing a gas sensor platform with flexible selectivity to different gas environments by combining a multi-pixel approach and artificial intelligence to adapt the data analysis to the targeted applications. It is based on metal oxide sensing materials on micro-hotplate platform, which are already available on the market for low power applications, but suffer from a lack of selectivity. Gas-selective multi-pixel sensors based on different metal oxide materials have been demonstrated, but their industrialization is limited to few industrially available materials. By using original additive manufacturing approaches for local liquid-phase and gas-phase depositions, we aim at extending the choice of available materials and demonstrate their sustainability in wafer-scale processing. Artificial intelligence will be used to accelerate the choice of materials, for data fusion to determine specific patterns in the gas analysis and to optimize sensor calibration through calibration transfer models. Three specific applications targeting personal exposure and health care will demonstrate the adaptability of the platform, based on an analysis of the users’ requirements. AI interpretation will be facilitated using model-agnostic interpretability analysis of the AI-based models for calibration transfer and on the use-case models.

The project brings together 11 partners from across Europe, with a total budget of over €8.5 million, and a duration of 48 months.

I-SENSE Group/ICCS proudly joins AMUSENS from May 2025 and will give a new boost to the project through:

The development of interpretable AI models for calibration transfer and signal analysis (WP15 & WP16),

Participation in the co-design process to ensure user-aligned tools,

And real-life testing with human participants in the stress estimation use case, combining breath analysis with wearable devices (WP10).

Connected and Adaptive Maintenance for Safer Urban and Secondary Roads

The Connected and Adaptive Maintenance for Safer Urban and Secondary Roads project (‘CAMBER’) aims to develop and demonstrate improved safety monitoring across urban and secondary rural road networks through realtime data feedback into road maintenance systems and proven low-cost interventions. Performance metrics based on new-generation data sources will provide road managers up-to-date information on safety issues, damage, and routine maintenance and upgrade needs. Data collated from a range of sources, such as telematics, vehicle and smartphone sensors, and road user feedback, will feed into safety assessment models to flag what measures are required to ensure a safe road environment for all road users, including road-user minority groups with varying design needs, such as powered two-wheelers (PTW).

CAMBER will support this through much-need research and testing of low-cost road safety interventions and low-impact maintenance techniques, including those for vehicles with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The approaches will be demonstrated on urban and road networks in five European countries. CAMBER’s economically-sound solutions and new knowledge will be communicated through established networks to European road managers, policymakers and industry to support the decision-making and investment needed for more efficient maintenance for safer urban and secondary roads.

ICCS is being represented by I-SENSE Group research group, leading WP5 Pilot testing and evaluation and the project’s 2nd Pilot held in Trikala, Greece.

We are thrilled to announce that the Industry 5.0 & Smart Manufacturing Division of I-SENSE Group / ICCS has been awarded a prestigious certification for its outstanding contributions to sustainability in robotics during ERF2025!

This important recognition celebrates our innovative work in robotic-based sorting systems for sustainable waste management, as presented at the “Sustainable Robotics” workshop during the forum.

Our awarded system integrates three key technological pillars:

Autonomous robotic platforms

AI-powered data fusion

Advanced multi-sensor agents

Together, these technologies are transforming waste sorting and recycling, driving greater use of recycled materials in production chains while significantly reducing environmental impact.

By combining agile industrial sorters with collaborative robotics, our solution maximizes resource recovery and minimizes the environmental footprint of waste management operations. Beyond operational benefits, our approach advances the sustainability of robotic systems themselves—through energy-efficient design, lifecycle assessment, and material circularity—promoting environmental protection, economic efficiency, and social inclusion across urban and industrial environments.

This achievement is a proud milestone in our ongoing mission to fuse innovation with sustainability, delivering real-world impact through next-generation technologies.

The THETIDA project approaches safeguarding and protecting Europe’s coastal and underwater cultural heritage from the effects of climate change and natural hazards in a holistic manner that includes risk management, protection and preparedness, as complementary strategies to prevent damages to cultural heritage sites, identify and ward off additional threats and promote policy tools for climate neutrality and economic resilience in coastal areas.

The THETIDA project will achieve this goal through the development of a preventive conservation strategy that includes monitoring, risk preparedness and management, for underwater and coastal (U&C-CH) sites, identify and ward off additional threats and promote adaptation, reconstruction and other post-disruption strategies to restore normal conditions to the historic areas, as well as long-term strategic approaches to adapt to climate change and to wield policy tools for economic resilience.

In this project, an interdisciplinary team of researchers, experts and practitioners will develop, test and validate an integrated multiple heritage risk assessment and protection system with evidence-based monitoring frameworks, innovative tools and instruments and through participatory processes (Citizens’ Science and Living Labs). The project implementation actions will link the social innovations with cutting-edge technologies (ICT and IoT harmonised tools).

AUTOmation Towards Multimodal Transportation and Integration of Freight

AutoMoTIF will focus on the development of strategies, business and governance models, regulatory recommendations and synergies that will enable the integration and interoperability of automated transport systems and solutions towards the operational automation of multimodal cargo flows and logistics supply chains in the intra-European network. It will list the gaps – both regulatory and technological – that are currently identified in automated transport technologies and logistics operations between modes and hubs through the analysis of automation demand and supply in multimodal transportation (users vs market). AutoMoTIF will follow an inclusive model to ensure that user and community needs are properly addressed and innovations are aligned with their expectations. UCs and scenarios will focus on real challenges and gaps in seamless automated logistics that will be simulated in real settings and different geographical locations.

The results of the UCs will be used to set up a master scenario addressing the end-to-end delivery of goods using highest degree of automation possible. The outcomes from current practices will be analysed, leading to the assessment of benefits that can be gained by exploiting automated transport means to seamless multimodal automatic cargo transport and vice versa. These benefits will be defined and analysed based on their social, environmental and economic impact, such as decreased emissions and congestion, improved working conditions and safety, as well as reduced logistics and freight transport costs, with the SSH aspects being a priority. AutoMoTIF will contribute to the enhancement of synergies among sectors and stakeholders, following European priorities, strategic partnerships, such as CCAM, Zero Emission Waterborne Transport and EU Rail JU to ensure that transferability of expected outcomes.
