Connected and Adaptive Maintenance for Safer Urban and Secondary Roads

The Connected and Adaptive Maintenance for Safer Urban and Secondary Roads project (‘CAMBER’) aims to develop and demonstrate improved safety monitoring across urban and secondary rural road networks through realtime data feedback into road maintenance systems and proven low-cost interventions. Performance metrics based on new-generation data sources will provide road managers up-to-date information on safety issues, damage, and routine maintenance and upgrade needs. Data collated from a range of sources, such as telematics, vehicle and smartphone sensors, and road user feedback, will feed into safety assessment models to flag what measures are required to ensure a safe road environment for all road users, including road-user minority groups with varying design needs, such as powered two-wheelers (PTW).

CAMBER will support this through much-need research and testing of low-cost road safety interventions and low-impact maintenance techniques, including those for vehicles with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The approaches will be demonstrated on urban and road networks in five European countries. CAMBER’s economically-sound solutions and new knowledge will be communicated through established networks to European road managers, policymakers and industry to support the decision-making and investment needed for more efficient maintenance for safer urban and secondary roads.

ICCS is being represented by I-SENSE Group research group, leading WP5 Pilot testing and evaluation and the project’s 2^nd Pilot held in Trikala, Greece.

ICCS Launches New Research Premises in Koropi – A Milestone for Greek Innovation

Last week marked an exciting new chapter for the I-SENSE Research Group of ICCS, as we officially inaugurated our brand-new premises in Koropi. The launch event was celebrated internally with the entire I-SENSE/ICCS team, bringing together more than 200 researchers for a vibrant day of team-building activities, games, and shared inspiration.

The Koropi premises feature state-of-the-art office spaces and cutting-edge research labs, dedicated primarily to Industry 5.0 applications and the testing of pioneering innovations. These new facilities will empower our researchers, fostering creativity, collaboration, and the development of groundbreaking technologies that push the frontiers of science and engineering.

The opening celebration was led by Dr. Angelos Amditis, Research and Development Director of ICCS and Director of I-SENSE, who welcomed attendees and shared his vision for the future. Short speeches were given by Prof. John Psarras (ICCS’s Director), Professor P.Tsanakas (Dean of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineerings/NTUA) who backed the effort, Dr. Giannis Karaseitanidis (I-SENSE Technical Director) and Dr. Georgios Tsimiklis (Research TMAT) whose commitment, hard work, and hands-on involvement were crucial in bringing the new premises to life. Everyone highlighted how important this new space is for the Greek research community.

Beyond a significant achievement for ICCS, the Koropi site represents a landmark development for NTUA and the broader academic ecosystem. It will also host the innovative activities of CogniSensus, a dynamic new spin-off of ICCS. Born from years of intensive research by the I-SENSE group, CogniSensus is set to revolutionize sensing, data modeling, visualization, and actuation technologies. These solutions aim to enhance decision-making, operational efficiency, and training in complex environments.

This expansion marks a pivotal milestone for ICCS, laying the foundation for continued excellence, innovation, and societal impact in the years to come.

The European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA)’s visit at I-SENSE Group of ICCS

It has been a great honour for ICCS welcoming the Director of European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA), Marina Zanchi, and Katleen ENGELBOSCH, Anna Katrami, Jean-François Junger, and Stéphane Hogan at the premises of ICCS in Zografou (National Technical University of Athens – NTUA). The meeting (held on May,15th) has been a great opportunity to demonstrate how innovative research at I-SENSE can build on HaDEA’s vision for a safer, healthier society and how HaDEA’s projects are making a difference in our community.

ICCS’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of research has always been supported by HaDEA’s vision for building a safer, healthier society and a competitive European Digital Economy. Prof Ioannis Psarras, Director of ICCS and Dr Angelos Amditis, Research and Developement Director of ICCS welcomed the representatives.
From smart technologies for Crisis Disaster Management, IoT devices, sensors and wearables to extended reality applications and tailored industrial sorters, our researchers’ live demos have provided evidence on how the projects funded by the HaDEA can deliver concrete results that benefit the lives of all EU citizens and contribute to a more healthy, resilience and fair and European industry.
Through dialogue, shared goals, and a commitment to excellence, we leveraged each other’s strengths to enable the technologies of the future, paving the way for further achievements.

Our distinguished visitors had the opportunity to watch live demos of innovative technologies developed by our Unit
✨ Digital Triage Tag – Digital System and Wearable Device for registration and monitoring of victims of mass casualty incidents (MCIs)
✨ Extended Reality technologies and applications for improved safety practices and training, user friendly IoT interfaces
✨ Wearables and localization sensors (biometric sensors, portable environmental sensors) and IoT systems
✨ Collaboration lines – industrial sorters enabling human- robot collaboration, testing facilities in industry 4.0.

All demos are based on technologies developed in the frame of currently running projects with HADEA such as ONCOSCREEN, ONCOVOC, ONCODIR Dig_IT , SPRINTER ASSIST-IoT Project, W2W, TERAVISION, Trineflex, MASTERMINE Project REDOL EU Project PLASTICE.

I-SENSE Group participates in the the 1st Automation & Robotics Exhibition in Greece, taking place in Athens Metropolitan Expo, on April 12-14, 2024. This highly anticipated event will bring together the top players in the industry to showcase the latest advancements and technology in the field of automation and robotics. Meet us at the Exhibition hall (E1, Hall 1, 10.00 – 19.00).

Our researchers from the Industry 5.0 & Smart Manufacturing Division will guide visitors through innovative technologies that revolutionise the waste management process.
