It was during the 34th General Assembly of ERTICO, the European Organization for Intelligent Transport Systems in Europe, that Dr Angelos Amditis, Research & Development Director of ICCS -and I-SENSE Group Director-, was unanimously re-elected ERTICO Chairman for a third consecutive term.

At a time when intelligent transport systems and their successful integration in transportation and logistics are high on the Greek political and business agenda, his presence at the head of the organization represents a significant opportunity for our country, a favourable occasion for international representation and connection with the pan-European developments in the transport and logistics sector.

With a vision towards smart, green, sustainable, and resilient transportation systems of the future, ERTICO, since 1991, has been the largest European collaborative formation for the integration of Intelligent Systems in Transport and the promotion of research and innovation in the areas of Connected and Automated Driving, Urban Mobility, Green Mobility, Freight Transport, and Logistics. Today, it counts more than 120 members, public and private entities across Europe (service providers, suppliers, large industries, telecommunications providers, automobile manufacturers, public authorities, user organizations, academic institutions, research bodies, etc.). Today, ERTICO is constantly expanding its membership with key players in the fields, and remains an important facilitator of EU research and policies in mobility and transport.

His re-election comes to seal already 6 years of effective and successful presidency at the head of the organization, during which ERTICO not only supported new synergies and opened new horizons and fields of activity but also strengthened its role as a key interlocutor of the EU for shaping European policies concerning the improvement of road safety, environmental protection, the development of reliable and efficient mobility services and solutions for citizens, and the promotion of innovation through synergies and partnerships.

This position offers a great opportunity for the Greek research and business community to be represented in the European dialogue, in a field where technological developments are rapid, global, and demand a complete restructuring of the landscape.

Reflecting on his re-election, Dr Amditis stated, “I am deeply honoured to stand before you today to have been approved as the Chairperson of the new Supervisory Board. This decision fills me with immense gratitude and I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to all of you for your trust and support. This collective and unanimous vote of confidence in me is truly humbling, and our shared commitment will continue driving ERTICO to new heights. Thank you.”

He continued, “Thank you for approving the Supervisory Board. We look forward to collaborating closely with all of you to guide ERTICO over the next three years. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all the members for their efforts, commitment, and investment of time and work during this past year. A special thanks also to my vice-chair Ronald Adams and Wolfgang Foltin, chair of the Finance Committee. Both of them also provide invaluable support to the Chairman’s Advisory Council. Of course, the Strategy Committee deserves warm thanks for their work and cooperation under the great leadership of Thomas Jaeger & newly appointed co-chair Svenja Hainz.

At last, please join me in congratulating our CEO Joost Vantomme on his well-deserved reappointment. Joost has received unanimous support from the Supervisory Board for a continued 3 years term from January 2025 onwards. We look forward to many more years of continued growth and success of our organisation with the support of Joost. My sincere thanks to Joost and his executive team, Didier Gorteman and Vladimir Vorotovic, and the entire ERTICO team for their dedication and enthusiasm in actively supporting and delivering on all our activities with high professionalism. The 9th ITS Hellas Conference ‘Transportation & Logistics 2024: Explore. Innovate. Transform’ was conducted successfully

The 9th annual conference of ITS Hellas, the Organization for Intelligent Transportation Systems in Greece, successfully concluded its sessions. Once again, it brought together policy, innovation, research, and entrepreneurship, fostering a dialogue that addressed the significant issues surrounding the digital transformation of transportation and logistics in Greece today.

With a vision for a future where all transportation of people and goods will be intelligent, green, and sustainable, the 9th ITS Hellas Conference, organized by ITS Hellas (Hellenic Organization for Intelligent Transportation Systems) and hosted by I-SENSE research group of the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems/National Technical University of Athens (ICCS/NTUA), took place successfully on June 5th and 6th at the Royal Olympic Hotel in Athens. It gathered over 100 participants and 20 speakers, including the Greek Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, the Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou, the Secretary General for Research and Innovation Prof. Athanasios Kyriazis, the Secretary General for Transport Ioannis Xifaras, the Mayor of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, Grigoris Konstantellos, among others.

In his official address, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Christos Staikouras, expressed the political leadership’s commitment to strengthen policies promoting intelligent transportation systems and to design the future with an eye on new technologies that will play a decisive role in the country’s developmental trajectory. The Minister of Digital Governance, Mr. Dimitris Papastergiou, emphasized the role of partnerships between the two ministries, noting that the effort is collective. He presented related actions by the Ministry of Digital Governance that are changing the landscape, focusing on data and system interoperability, and promising a digital future for Greek transportation. “At the core of everything we discuss and plan lies research and innovation,” highlighted Prof. Athanasios Kyriazis, Secretary General for Research and Innovation (GGEK), providing valuable insights into Greece’s performance.

The conference was introduced by Dr. Georgia Ayfantopoulou, President of ITS Hellas, Director of Research, Deputy Director of CERTH/HIT, and Dr. Angelos Amditis, Vice President of ITS Hellas, President of ERTICO-ITS Europe, Director of Research & Development at ICCS/NTUA. “It is essential for society to develop the conditions necessary for promoting Greek technological solutions aimed at achieving maximum efficiency in transportation and logistics. ITS will find themselves in a new operational environment and opportunities, becoming part of a complex process and part of solutions that contribute to accelerating the transition to climate neutrality. The interoperability of technical solutions and our ability and readiness to integrate new technologies (artificial intelligence) will be key factors in deciding competitiveness” explained Dr. Ayfantopoulou.

“The developments themselves show that integrating new technologies in transportation is now an imperative and not a choice. However, it is a complex process involving many stakeholders, both public and private. Beyond technology and its maturity, an array of factors will determine success: Political will, long-term and effective planning, timely action, private initiative, and collective vision are just some of the essential components. This year’s ITS Hellas conference aims precisely at bringing all these elements together to enable Exploration-Innovation-Transformation and highlight ITS Hellas’s role in this process,” noted Mr. Amditis, welcoming the audience to the two-day event.

The first day focused on the transportation sector. Representatives from local administration and European organizations and schemes presented the broader framework, aspects of European strategies, international developments, and priorities for Greece. Representatives of major construction and technology companies discussed on their efforts to integrate intelligent systems as part of the infrastructure. Particularly interesting was the session on urban mobility, which included participation from Ioannis Xifaras, Secretary General for Transport, and Grigoris Konstantellos, Mayor of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, as well as representatives from local government, academia, and business.

The second day of the conference focused on the digital transformation of the supply chain, with extensive presentations on how Greek businesses are striving daily to embrace technological changes and how Greek research can generate innovation. The discussion focused on the challenges faced by the business environment in the logistics sector regarding the implementation of eCMR & EFTi protocols and broader trends and policies expected to drive the sector’s transformation in Greece in the coming years was lively.

“These two days managed to breathe life into our shared vision of a sustainable, green, and connected transportation system for our country. This is an important goal that ITS Hellas could not achieve without the valuable contribution of its members and the broader ecosystem of transportation and logistics in Greece” notes Dr Angelos Amditis. “Cultivating a collaborative culture and strengthening structures and formations like ITS Hellas that involve diverse stakeholders with a common vision, supporting partnerships and knowledge exchange, are essential for our country to integrate technology and generate innovation in transportation and logistics,” noted Ms. Ayfantopoulou, closing the conference and inviting the Greek business, research, and academic community to learn about the benefits of joining ITS Hellas.

ICCS featured in the EU’s Innovation Radar: on 5G and IoT Platform in Port Operations

It has been a great honour for ICCS welcoming the Director of European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA), Marina Zanchi, and Katleen ENGELBOSCH, Anna Katrami, Jean-François Junger, and Stéphane Hogan at the premises of ICCS in Zografou (National Technical University of Athens – NTUA). The meeting (held on May,15th) has been a great opportunity to demonstrate how innovative research at I-SENSE can build on HaDEA’s vision for a safer, healthier society and how HaDEA’s projects are making a difference in our community.

ICCS’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of research has always been supported by HaDEA’s vision for building a safer, healthier society and a competitive European Digital Economy. The second edition of the Hi-Drive Summer School on ‘Navigating the Future with Advanced and Safe Automated Driving’ will be held in Athens! This two-day event, scheduled for 25 – 26 September 2024 at Amarilia Hotel in Vouliagmeni, is proudly organised by the EU project Hi-Drive and the I-SENSE Group of the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) of the National and Technical University of Athens.

Focused exclusively on the Implementation and Testing of Higher Levels of Automation, this second edition aims to delve deeper into the latest advancements, challenges, and opportunities in the dynamic field of Automated Driving (AD). Prominent speakers from both academia and industry, and renowned experts from European projects and international initiatives will deliver lectures to ensure participants gain insights into the forefront of AD research and practice.

Geared towards young researchers, PhD students, and professionals in the field of AD, the Hi-Drive Summer School 2024 program will allow all participants to expand their expertise and networks, and learn more about cutting-edge advancements in autonomous vehicle systems, related to Motion Prediction and Testing, Collective Perception (CP) and Testing, Use of Machine Learning to safeguard AD during runtime, and Methods for AD virtual Verification and Validation (V&V) and impact assessment.

Call for Poster Proposals:

I-SENSE Group supports the FIRST TECH Challenge and the winners are…!

The 1st Hellenic FIRST TECH Challenge Championship took place in Thessaloniki, 9-10/03 and we are proud to announce that the UniREVsals student team of Mellon Lab was the winner of the 1st place in the championship! The team which is mentored by I-SENSE Group is now set to represent Greece at the World FIRST TECH Challenge in Houston from April 17th to 20th. This is a historic success as it marks the first Greek team to represent Greece at the World FIRST TECH Challenge. Also, congratulations to the Suited Penguins team for the Motivation Award! The results are reported here.

The FIRST TECH Challenge Championship was carried under the auspices of I-SENSE Group of ICCS and our researchers B. Tsougiannis, K.Kokkalis, T.Theodoropoulos, G.Karaisetanidis, P.Zoumpoulis, are following the student teams UniREVsals and Suited Penguins as mentors.

In the FIRST Tech Challenge, teams (up to 15 team members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and working as a team.

The robot kit is reusable from year to year and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming. Teams design and build robots, raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach to earn specific awards.

Each season concludes with regional championship events and an exciting FIRST Championship.

Wood2Wood was launched: a Revolutionary Horizon Europe Project Pioneering Wood Value Chain Solutions.

On February 19 & 20, the European Wood2Wood project held its kick-off meeting in Athens. Coordinated by the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) of NTUA, and its I-SENSE research unit, the project involves 25 partners – companies, institutes, organizations and academic bodies – coming from 9 European countries and South Africa, within the framework of Horizon Europe.

W2W, short for Wood-to-Wood Cascade Upcycling Valorisation, is aimed at reshaping how we potentially use, re-use and recycle wood, especially from construction and demolition (C&D) and discarded furniture, proposes and plan a circular course for the use of wood, based on the circular economy principles. In the context of the project, through an integrated approach, advanced wood separation and sorting technologies, recycling processes and technologies as well as digital tools will be used and developed to improve the circular flows of secondary materials. At the same time, the creation of a wider support framework for the implementation of the technologies that will be developed will be considered, both in terms of policies, as well as in the terms of the market and the development of appropriate skills. The effectiveness and sustainability of value chains will be examined through three different use cases.

ISENSE, in addition to coordinating the project, also leads work packages on waste management and collaborates on work packages aimed at developing digital technologies to improve circular flows of secondary materials.
